Two hundred and fifty conscript criminals. Two seasoned veterans. One young captain, All packed on a leaky ship as disposable as they themselves, headed for a mission they know they cannot win.
THE TARGET: The dead city of Bagédaan.
THE LOCATION: The northern tip of the Empire of Sudaan on the fantasy world Menelon.
THE STAKES: A winner take all battle for the last coastal stronghold of the Confederacy.
Nobody expects them to live. Everybody wants them to win.
The city of Bagédaan has been occupied by the Confederacy for nearly a century. They want to keep it. The Allies want to take it. They've bombed it, assaulted it, dropped bombs on it, yet still it remains solidly in Confederate hands. The Army can't take it, the Navy can't bombard it. So the Supreme Allied Command comes up with a brilliant plan: Disposable troops sent on an impossible mission from which they're not expected to return.
In command they put a young Captain who has no real battle or command experience; an old, illiterate Commander whom the enemy can't seem to kill and who won't politely die of old age on his own; and a Chief as young as the Captain, but who at least has more experience. Add a boat load of thieves and military rejects that nobody wants to be responsible for and you have the perfect prescription for...
Well, the Navy hopes you have the perfect prescription for accomplishing the impossible.
But the odds are two hundred to one. Casualties mount as the city's occupiers react to Captain Terrell's surprise attack. Can Chief Westman get back to his Captain in time to help him implement his escape plan? Can the pretty young Seaman, Tasha McKinnis, find her way back behind the lines after her team is killed? Or is she destined to suffer horrors no human woman wants to contemplate at the hands of their very inhuman enemy? Can grizzled old Commander Finway help his brilliant young Captain escape a death trap set for them by their own crew? Or will Confederate General Tzäctl rally his forces in time to defeat the tiny band of insurgents?
The board is set. The pieces are moving. The wagers have been laid, and the stakes are very, very high.
Bagédaan! Be there!
